1. Congrats to Nationals Kids - Our kids did great at Nationals We earned many medals and the kids really came through with their best of the season.  The standards have really been raised and the competition is very tough now- Next year is San Antonio, TX and we hope all will attend. Many on our team also got to spend time learning about the first American town of Jamestown and visit Washington DC! We are so lucky to have sport that lets us travel and learn about our history!

2. T&T Camp starts Monday - Join us for our awesome 5 day T&T Camp- this is the camp that kids will get skills that those not in attendance will regret not learning too!! We will spend most of our time on new skills and then major time for strength and flexibility.  If you have been absent more than one week this summer one for our two sports specific camps is mandatory! Athlete readiness is the only way to guarantee your space on the team.

3. USAG Member renewal time - It’s time to renew your athletes USAG membership. The form is in your family folder.  They must be completed with credit card before July 23rd to ensure continuous USAG enrollment and no loss of your magazine subscription. It is also mandatory if you are attending Woodward. Renew on time to continue the benefits of membership!

4. Uniform & Shoe  Order - If you need uniform pieces please notify us immediately by filling out the form on the desk. If your child has outgrown their uniform let us know and we may be able to find a trade for a larger size.  Additionally we will be ordering the new season exhibition/ show leo in time to wear to Woodward- So get those orders in right away! Tramp shoe orders will be placed July 26th.

5. Camping Trip – The team camping trip is just around the corner. We scouted the campground and lake today and it is VERY full! So full that the cliffs are under water- the cliff jump this year may be suited for the chickens!! Look for the potluck sign up sheet next week on the front desk.  This annual fun weekend IS CRITICAL to the ongoing success of the family based supportive culture we have worked hard to create.  Families are STRONGLY encouraged to attend. If you need help to reserve your site let us know and we can help.

6. Fall Schedules - There are going to be some changes to how the levels train in the fall. The Monday Wednesday class is now full and no room for additional athletes. However the Tuesday Thursday group will now offer a level 8 training group and we are looking to try to extend the Thursday practice. As we near the start of school we will have more details.

7. Upcoming Comp fee deadlines – The second installment of artistic gymnastics fees are due August 1st and the first installment of T&T fees are due on September 1st.  The T&T schedule will be out as soon at the National Office sets the Master schedule.

8. 100 skills in 100 days - Hooray it is finally here! The kids ask all year when it’s 100 skills time! As a team we are trying to get 100 new skills in the next 100 days! Last year we finished ahead of the hundred day deadline.  Ask your kids what they have learned….What goals they have made.

We also sure appreciate the hard work the APTTA Board ( Courtney, Jen, Lisa, & Carrie) for the food and our games and set up crew (Amy, Amy, Celeste, Haley, Nancy) putting it all together.

2.Gym Closed next week – Just a reminder that our gym is closed next week. The kids DO NOT have a conditioning list- They get a whole week completely off! The only thing we ask is that they stay active – find some fun summer activities to do!  We will open again on July 5th!

3. AP Half Day T&T Camp – Our half day T&T camp starts on July 12th  There is still space available in the T&T camp here, but I will have flyers at Nationals and expect it to fill before our return.  There will be many more drills and progressions for kids to get new skills than we have time for in regular class!

4.Team Camping Trip - Get all set  for team camping trip.. There a some sites still open to join in the fun, food, and great memories.  Water is high and should still be then.  We will be at Folsom again and will have big fun planned for Saturday if you can only come for the day!

1.Team Luau & Parent Meeting Sunday - The team luau end of year party, award ceremony, and mandatory parent meeting are this Sunday at the Jacobson’s new place in Penryn. The fun begins at 2PM with games and social time, followed by the APTTA sponsored meal at 5PM, and then the awards & parent meeting at 6PM. Be sure and bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on, drinks for the afternoon, marshmallow roasting sticks, & sun block.

As a child my Dad was a Shriner and every year we went to a family Luau at one of his friends houses in Las Vegas. It was always one of the highlights of my summer- he had a true oasis with every fun thing a kid could dream of doing.  We ran free on his acreage “Jerry Berry Berry’s Patch”, played volleyball and croquet, swam, fished, and ended the day with s’mores.  Ron & I hope to make this new property hold that same memory your family as time goes by! We look forward to having you at our own little “Berry Patch”.

2. Awesome Youth Olympic Selection & Cirque Show – This has been a spectacular week for our athletes to witness our sport at it’s highest form.  The USA chose Hunter Brewster and Savannah Vinsant ( both athletes coached by our regular clinician Dmitri Poliaroush)to represent our Country to the first Youth Olympic Games.  Both the Jr Elites and Sr Elites gave stunning performances in the competition held here Sunday night. Last night a large group from Team AP witnessed the spectacular grace and athleticism of the Cirque du Sloeil performance of Allegria.  The stunning aerial performances, feats of strength and flexibility kept the whole group on the edge of our seats.  Then through the kind hospitality of Cirque Staffer Isabel, We were able to wait after the show for a Q&A session with stage manager Alan and former Portuguese National Team member and Allegria’s Lead Trampolinist  Diogo Faria  The children got to ask questions and find out how they chose their cast, what they do, how much they train, and many more things from the gracious Cirque crew!  If you missed Allegria with us- it will be at Arco all weekend and we highly recommend seeing it if there are seats still available!

3. Dress Code for summer workouts - The heat is finally here! Just a reminder from our parent handbook that there is a dress code for workout! Girls must be in a leotard, shorts are permitted if they are the tight form fitting ones designed four our sport- hair must be in a ponytail or a bun, boys must wear a mens step in or a tight fitting shirt like our exhibition one with shorts or trampoline pants.

4. Team Camping Trip - Team camping trip is right around the corner- July 23rd -25th.  The levels 9 and up and ages 13 and up may arrive the 22nd for the leadership development day that begins early Friday morning.  There are a few spots still available in the campground and I hear many of you have yet to book your space! Do it now at  http://www.reserveamerica.com/camping/map_of_Folsom_Lake_Sra/r/campgroundMap.do?camparea=91524790&contractCode=CA&parkId=120034 This is such a fun weekend that even non campers have transformed for this annual event!

5. T&T Day Camp at AP – The T&T Day camp still has space available – We run a fine summer day camp with great skill learning opportunities to drill in on those new skills and routines for next season! 7. Realistic Optimism – From the Goldfish Crackers Fishful thinking team—Another great idea!

There is a body of research that shows optimistic thinking has many important benefits in academic achievement, social relationships, and physical health. There is also debate about optimism and whether all optimism is good. I like the term Realistic Optimism because it highlights optimism that is wed to reality. Realistic Optimism is about seeing the good without denying the bad. It’s about seizing control while acknowledging that not everything is controllable. It’s about choosing to focus on the positive aspects of a situation, while still learning from, and accepting, the negative aspects.

One way to help your children develop Realistic Optimism is to help them notice the good in the world around them. You can make a “Good News” poster or bulletin board, where you and your children post newspaper clippings, photographs, or a written description of good news stories you hear (e.g., acts of kindness, successes, moments of joy, etc.). By teaching your children to notice goodness, you will help them value goodness and they will learn to be on the lookout for it.

Another way to build Realistic Optimism is to help your children identify where they have control. For example, if your child’s baseball team loses a game, acknowledge the disappointment or frustration and then ask questions that focus on what your child can control to increase the likelihood of a win next time. You can ask, “What is one thing you want to practice between now and your next game?” Or, “What was one thing you did really well in the game? How can you build on that during your next game?” When you notice your children lamenting about things that were outside of their control, gently point that out by saying something like, “It would be great if we could control the weather, wouldn’t it? But since we can’t, let’s focus on what you have some control over, like keeping your eye on the ball or working on your slide.”

Finally, you can cultivate Realistic Optimism in your kids by cultivating it in yourself! When you notice yourself thinking pessimistically, call a “Do Over” and model for your child how to challenge pessimistic thinking and change your perception. For example, if you hear yourself thinking “I’m never going to learn to play tennis well. I should have picked an easier sport!” Let your child know that is what you were thinking and then model a more optimistic response, such as “Well, I won’t learn tennis overnight, but if I practice I’ll get better and it’s fun to do something challenging!” By calling a “Do Over” you will show your child that everyone thinks pessimistically at times, and that if we pay attention to our thinking, we can change it so that we build positive emotions and motivation.

Sincerely,
Karen Reivich, Ph.D.
