1. Help Send Jordan to Portugal! – Donations needed to send Team AP’s 2010 Olympic Development Team member Jordan to Portugal. Until last week, we thought that Team USA may not have an International assignment for the ODP team, but details have been finalized to attend the World Cup event in Loulle Portugal. Unfortunately due to the timing after Nationals, it creates a funding hardship. If anyone would like to donate to help send Jordan on his first International
assignment- please contact Courtney at APTTA or Amy at the gym. If we do not raise enough money we will have to notify USA-Gymnastics that Jordan will not be able to attend.
2. Camping Trip Success - Once again an amazing experience on the annual team camping trip. What a great opportunity to get to know the athletes and their families and build the bonds of friendship and trust that keeps the children involved and growing into healthy, happy adults. Thanks to everyone that attended and especially the families that brought their boats to keep the water fun flying!
3. Mandatory Parent Meeting – Reminder of our mandatory parent meeting on Monday August . We hope to have the competition schedule for the upcoming season as well as updates to our team program and handbook.
4. Where are Ron and Susan – Just in case you forgot- This is the annual week we head to Michigan to coach at the T&T Scholarship camp. Camp Wakeshma is the major funding source for the Trampoline and Tumbling college scholarship program. We would love to see many AP athletes joining us next year at camp! Following Wakeshma, is the Visa Elite Nationals Championships in Hartford Connecticut. Fantastic timing for Coach George Sr to return to the program to assist in class coverage in our absence. This is the time of the year where we test and review all basics in addition to the fun 100 skill challenge. Additionally Coach Tyler is home working at Sunsplash and will lend his double mini expertise as his other schedule allows. Our women’s’ artistic coach George Jr who narrowly missed the Olympic Team in Men’s gymnastics but also represented the USA at the T&T World Championships is helping the T&T team while we are gone. Haley is also there to provide her excellent coaching skills as well- We have left you all in VERY capable hands!
5. Woodward Camp – The Woodward camp is just around the corner. IF you would like your child to ride in one of the carpools headed south over Labor Day weekend please notify us of that need and we will arrange transportation for them. We anticipate leaving around noon that Friday.
6. Letters to Coach Jamie – Coach Jamie is half way through his Marine Officer Candidate School and is doing very well. He has been appointed Platoon Leader for his company. The team made some notes of encouragement to let him know we are thinking of him If your family would like to send a note of your own ask Amy or Coach Stephanie for his address. He returns August 26th.
7. USAG – registration is due today. Your child’s current membership will expire tomorrow. All you need to do is fill out the form that is in your family folder and return it to Amy. She will process all registrations/renewals online and use your credit card that we have on file.
8. APTTA Board – We are looking for someone to be the Fundraising Coordinator for the parent board. If you are interested, please talk to Courtney Oh or Jennifer Garcia ASAP. Also if you would like to help out but are not wanting to be on the board, please let us know as we have other “jobs” that we are in need of help with. A huge THANK YOU to Carrie Morris and Jackie Rampenelli for taking on the Silent Auction for our January meet!
APTTA- Used Book Sale
Many thanks to all of the families that have donated books so far. We have raised $337 since May 2010! If you haven’t donated books yet or have extras lying around and would like to donate them, please place them in the Rubbermaid container in the parent room. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Hill.

Be sure and bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on, drinks for the afternoon, marshmallow roasting sticks, & sun block.
As a child my Dad was a Shriner and every year we went to a family Luau at one of his friends houses in Las Vegas. It was always one of the highlights of my summer- he had a true oasis with every fun thing a kid could dream of doing. We ran free on his acreage “Jerry Berry Berry’s Patch”, played volleyball and croquet, swam, fished, and ended the day with s’mores. Ron & I hope to make this new property hold that same memory your family as time goes by! We look forward to having you at our own little “Berry Patch”.
2. Awesome Youth Olympic Selection & Cirque Show – This has been a spectacular week for our athletes to witness our sport at it’s highest form. The USA chose Hunter Brewster and Savannah Vinsant ( both athletes coached by our regular clinician Dmitri Poliaroush)to represent our Country to the first Youth Olympic Games. Both the Jr Elites and Sr Elites gave stunning performances in the competition held here Sunday night. Last night a large group from Team AP witnessed the spectacular grace and athleticism of the Cirque du Sloeil performance of Allegria. The stunning aerial performances, feats of strength and flexibility kept the whole group on the edge of our seats. Then through the kind hospitality of Cirque Staffer Isabel, We were able to wait after the show for a Q&A session with stage manager Alan and former Portuguese National Team member and Allegria’s Lead Trampolinist Diogo Faria The children got to ask questions and find out how they chose their cast, what they do, how much they train, and many more things from the gracious Cirque crew! If you missed Allegria with us- it will be at Arco all weekend and we highly recommend seeing it if there are seats still available!
3. Dress Code for summer workouts - The heat is finally here! Just a reminder from our parent handbook that there is a dress code for workout! Girls must be in a leotard, shorts are permitted if they are the tight form fitting ones designed four our sport- hair must be in a ponytail or a bun, boys must wear a mens step in or a tight fitting shirt like our exhibition one with shorts or trampoline pants.

7. Realistic Optimism – From the Goldfish Crackers Fishful thinking team—Another great idea!
There is a body of research that shows optimistic thinking has many important benefits in academic achievement, social relationships, and physical health. There is also debate about optimism and whether all optimism is good. I like the term Realistic Optimism because it highlights optimism that is wed to reality. Realistic Optimism is about seeing the good without denying the bad. It’s about seizing control while acknowledging that not everything is controllable. It’s about choosing to focus on the positive aspects of a situation, while still learning from, and accepting, the negative aspects.
One way to help your children develop Realistic Optimism is to help them notice the good in the world around them. You can make a “Good News” poster or bulletin board, where you and your children post newspaper clippings, photographs, or a written description of good news stories you hear (e.g., acts of kindness, successes, moments of joy, etc.). By teaching your children to notice goodness, you will help them value goodness and they will learn to be on the lookout for it.
Another way to build Realistic Optimism is to help your children identify where they have control. For example, if your child’s baseball team loses a game, acknowledge the disappointment or frustration and then ask questions that focus on what your child can control to increase the likelihood of a win next time. You can ask, “What is one thing you want to practice between now and your next game?” Or, “What was one thing you did really well in the game? How can you build on that during your next game?” When you notice your children lamenting about things that were outside of their control, gently point that out by saying something like, “It would be great if we could control the weather, wouldn’t it? But since we can’t, let’s focus on what you have some control over, like keeping your eye on the ball or working on your slide.”
Finally, you can cultivate Realistic Optimism in your kids by cultivating it in yourself! When you notice yourself thinking pessimistically, call a “Do Over” and model for your child how to challenge pessimistic thinking and change your perception. For example, if you hear yourself thinking “I’m never going to learn to play tennis well. I should have picked an easier sport!” Let your child know that is what you were thinking and then model a more optimistic response, such as “Well, I won’t learn tennis overnight, but if I practice I’ll get better and it’s fun to do something challenging!” By calling a “Do Over” you will show your child that everyone thinks pessimistically at times, and that if we pay attention to our thinking, we can change it so that we build positive emotions and motivation.
Sincerely,
Karen Reivich, Ph.D.
